Tesla launches Model X electric SUV

Tesla Motors has launched the Model X, an all-electric powered luxury SUV. Tesla calls it the safest, fastest and most capable SUV in history. The Model X comes with a 90 kWh battery good for a quoted 400km range. The top model comes with the ‘ludicrous’ mode acceleration of 0-96kph in 3.2 seconds.

Tesla says that with the floor-mounted battery pack and a lower center of gravity, the Model X is more resistant to rolling over. Rollover risk is about half that of other vehicles in its class. The sturdy battery structure also protects against side impacts, while the engine-less front trunk acts as a large crumple zone.

The most striking feature of the Model X is the rear ‘falcon wing’ aka gullwing doors, that open upward to allow access to the second and third row. Tesla reckons that when parked in a tight space, with only a foot of clearance on each side, the doors allow easy access to second and third-row seats. A large panoramic windshield stretches from into the roof, allowing a better front view. An active rear spoiler deploys at speed for better stability.

The Model X can stow two golf bags in its front trunk. The third row can fold down to stow bicycles and skis. The Model X can tow 2267kg. The standard 90D model has a 259hp front and 259hp rear motor, while the performance P90D has a 259hp front and 503hp rear motor. Top speed is electronically limited to 248kph.

Active safety features include road-monitoring camera, radar and sonar systems, with the Model X able to automatically brake at highway speeds to help avoid collisions. A ‘medical-grade’ HEPA filter takes out pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution from outside air before it enters the cabin. There’s a ‘biodefense’ mode for the aircon that increases cabin pressure to prevent outside air from coming in.

Model X can seat up to seven passengers, in three rows of seating. It can also be configured for six seats, with the middle row seating two.

The Model X was launched in California by CEO Elon Musk to an audience of media and Tesla owners. Delivery Price ranges from $80,000 to $132,000, before tax incentives. You can place a $5000 deposit on its website and expect delivery of the car in the second half of 2016, and yes, they accept PayPal.
