Driven Mom’s driving wishes

By Jeanette Ipapo-Tuason May 03,2016

I had a dilemma as to what topic I should write about this week. There are two big events happening, one is the May 9 presidential election, and the other is Mother’s Day. I initially thought of doing a piece about how the next president should pay more attention to road safety, but a more pleasant and positive topic came to mind.

Mothers have become a global force when making car purchases. We used to think that women would just choose the color of the car, but nowadays they have a say on the brand, model and price of the car.

This influence came about when women started embracing their empowered state of being able to successfully balance life, career and parenthood.

So what do moms really want to change in their cars or the situation on the road? For me, better enforcement of the anti-drunk driving law. It’s very heartbreaking for a mother to bring up a child with so much potential only to be killed by someone who wasn’t able to say no to a shot of tequila.

In terms of car accessories, a futuristic self-drive function that you can activate when there’s heavy traffic so you can do other things while traversing the road home.

Another thing that most establishments should have is a 15-minute easy access parking where busy moms can park, do her errand, and quickly get on her way without the hassle of doing the whole nine yards.

Here are some wishes of fellow driven mothers.

Because of the traffic situation in Manila, I think would be really cool to have a customized mobile office in the car complete with a pull-down table, Wi-Fi, an electric outlet and a lamp.

Most of the time, kids are also stuck in the car. So much time is wasted on the road. If the roads become one big parking lot, at least the kids and I can be productive and get some work (studies for them) done.

It would also be nice to have a nice cooler console to hold drinks. That’s the ultimate modification I’d have wanted.

I would love if cars came with a built-in car seat.  The car seat can be easily folded in and out (out of the backseat) as you need it.  This would save me loads of time and the hassle of moving our car seat from car to car.

Some items that could help me take advantage of the drive time are a built-in hair dryer that I can use while I drive my son to school or a built-in neck massager on the driver’s chair that would automatically turn on when I put my car on park.

My wish is for more educated motorists to ply the roads. This includes private car owners, and truck, bus, jeepney, taxi, and even motorcycle drivers.

I wish for safer roads so that my loved ones are sure to come home every day.

My wish is a way to sync your calendar or to-do list to the car entertainment system.

It gives you real time updates and reminders on things you need to finish before going home such as stopping by the grocery or picking up your kid. This will be helpful to moms who have their hands full.

Happy Mother’s Day and vote wisely!
