CONSUMERS shopping for a fuel-efficient new car should consult the fuel economy ratings of 70 models noted by the Department of Energy (DOE) during its Euro 4 Fuel Economy Run last month.

Fueled by Petron Tri-Activ gasoline and diesel, 70 motor vehicles of various body types and engine displacements fielded by 22 car companies traversed a preset route of 280 kilometers starting from Petron Clark station in Angeles City, Pampanga, through Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway, and back.

The eco run flagged off at midnight from Petron’s Clark station with a navigator, observer and driver aboard each vehicle, and ended at dawn of May 27.

Since traffic on the expressways is not heavy from midnight to dawn and it was a controlled run, the DOE Euro 4 Fuel Economy Run did not really approximate standard driving conditions.

Another run

Energy Secretary Zenaida Y. Monsada, who attended the presentation of results last June 14 at Makati Diamond Residences, said the DOE may organize another fuel eco run in uncontrolled, real world conditions, as in traffic during rush hour or during a thunderstorm.

Under controlled conditions on May 27, the participants produced excellent results.

Twenty-seven out of 38 gasoline vehicles using Petron XCS (95-RON) achieved fuel economy ratings exceeding 20 kilometers per liter. This represented 71 percent of the gasoline entries.

At the same time, 21 out of 32 diesel participants, or 65 percent of the entries fueled by Petron Turbo Diesel, also achieved over 20 km/L.

Topnotcher

A REFRESHED Celerio is best described as best-in-class luggage capacity, superb ease and comfort in driving, and outstanding fuel efficiency.

The topnotcher in the gasoline category was the 1.0-liter front-wheel drive (FWD) Suzuki Celerio hatchback with a CVT (continuously variable transmission), which scored 29.14 km/L using Petron XCS.

In the diesel category, the Isuzu D-Max 4×2 3.0-L rear-wheel drive (RWD) pickup truck with a five-speed manual transmission attained an amazing 38.4 km/L using Petron Turbo Diesel.

At the presentation of results ceremony, Secretary Monsada distributed plaques of appreciation and fuel economy rating certificates to the participating car companies.

Assisting her were Energy Undersecretary Donato Marcos, who participated in the eco run, and Assistant Energy Secretary Patrick Aquino.

Importance

Monsada said that the May 27 fuel economy run, the first in the country using Euro 4 fuels but the 12th led by the DOE, is part of the DOE’s efforts to promote judicious use of energy and also aims to guide car buyers by highlighting the importance of fuel economy aside from performance, quality and safety.

She added that the DOE is promoting the use of Euro 4 fuels, which was mandated starting January this year. Euro 4 fuels are more environment friendly since they contain only 50 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur and benzene compared to the Euro 2’s 500 ppm.
