Mercedes announces S 63 AMG with 585 hp

By Jason K. Ang July 23,2013

Like the workings of a Black Forest cuckoo clock, after the introduction of a new Mercedes model, comes the hotter, borderline-insane version courtesy of AMG. In this case, just weeks after the new S-Class has been announced, the new S 63 AMG is making its way to the autobahn. The S 63 is powered by a 5.5-liter biturbo V8, with an output of 585 hp, and 900 Nm from just 2250 rpm.

Weight has also been reduced by 100 kg from its predecessor. The weight savings comes from forged light-alloy wheels, a lithium-ion battery and “weight-optimized” composite brake system. The entire outer skin of the S-Class is now aluminum. The spare tire case is carbon fiber. The result: 0-100 km/h is 4.0 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 248 kph, which can be turned off to allow to go close to or beyond 300 kph.

The AMG engine is assembled by hand in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” philosophy. The lithium ion battery replaces both the starter and backup battery, is lighter by 20kg, and more compact. The engine is mated to a seven-speed Multi-Clutch Technology transmission, essentially the 7-Gtronic automatic without a torque converter

Tires are 255/45 19 up front and 285/40 19 at the rear, mounted exclusively on AMG forged light-alloy wheels. 20-inch wheels are optional. Ceramic disc brakes are available, in a diameter of 420mm. Expect the new S-Class, as well as any AMG variants, to be available in the Philippines later this year.
