Chrysler has announced the return of the Viper supercar, with no less than an entire factory reopening for production. Chrysler’s Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit will come back online and rehire 150 employees.
The new Viper, said to be based off the Alfa Romeo 8C , will no longer bear the Dodge name. Rather, it will be badged SRT (Street and Racing Technology), Chrysler’s high-performance brand.
Chrysler began Viper production in May 1992, and went on to produce cars at the rate of 12 vehicles a day, for a total of 28,056 Vipers. Reopening the factory will have Chrysler as the only auto manufacturer with two assembly plants in Detroit City.
The reopening of the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant reaffirms Chrysler Group’s commitment to the City of Detroit as the only auto manufacturer with two assembly plants in the city.
