All-new Mazda CX-5: First Photos

August 02,2011

Meet the long-awaited successor to the Tribute, which is most notable for spawning the Ford Escape. Mazda will unveil the all-new CX-5 compact crossover at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Not only does the new CX-5 update the styling to be in tune with Mazda’s new “Kodo-Soul of Motion” theme, the car will be the first to fully adopt Mazda’s Skyactiv fuel-efficiency technology.

Skyactiv encompasses drivetrain and chassis advances that will enable greater fuel efficiency without the complexity of a hybrid drivetrain. The engine lineup for the European specification CX-5 will include Mazda’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine, and SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine available in Standard Power and High Power versions. Mazda says that it focused on achieving exceptional environmental performance for a compact SUV and targeted CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km for the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 engine model. Some models will feature engine auto start-stop.

A peer at the cutaway indicates double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear, which bodes well for the ride and handling characteristics. The interior looks like trademark Mazda–good seats and straightforward instruments done in a sober black scheme.

According to Mazda: The CX-5 is also the first production model to showcase Mazda’s new design theme, ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’, which was previewed with the Mazda SHINARI and Mazda MINAGI concept cars. Unique themes of KODO design include a prominent new front view with a bolder family face and dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility.

Fuel efficiency aside, Mazda promises that the car will still have Mazda’s trademark fun to drive factor, with the expected agile handling and maneuverability.

Expect the CX-5 to arrive locally sometime in 2012.
