With reports of Russia, New Jersey, Austria and Thailand all bidding for a slot in the 2014 Formula 1 calendar, the 20 race per year limit could be breached. There are talks that some circuits could lose their races to keep the number at 20. The 2013 season was supposed to have 20 races, with New Jersey being dropped at the last moment because of reported contractual differences.
“Is India going to happen next year? Probably not,” Ecclestone had told Reuters at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend. “It’s very political,” he added. This statement along with speculations that the Korean GP organizers are in the red since the inaugural race in 2010; add to this protest rallies in Bahrain every time F1 comes to town, could give Russia and Austria their much desired Grands Prix.
As fans, we would love to see races every weekend, but for this would not suit the people who work in Formula 1, all the drivers, mechanics, press officers, photographers, even those who remain in the teams factories; they all deserve a respite from it all. Any number over 22 races in a season would not sit well with the teams.
The planned changes in the Formula 1 calendar pales in comparison to the latest rumour in the paddock. Fernando Alonso is to leave Ferrari, and will drive for Red Bull Racing in 2014. Reports have it that Fernando’s managers are in talks with Christian Horner to have Alonso fill the vacated seat of Mark Webber. Alonso was even quoted in the Italian press saying he would like a faster car for his birthday on July 29.
As expected all those involved were asked to confirm the news, and true to form, denials issued all around.
