NAIAS 2012: Honda/Acura NSX Concept supercar [with video]

January 17,2012

Honda Motor Co. has announced a new NSX, debuting in concept form at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The NSX will once again be a mid-engined V6 supercar, this time with hybrid power.

The new NSX will use a lightweight but stiff chassis (whether it will be all-aluminum like the original is still under wraps), a mid-mounted V6 engine assisted by an electric motor built into the transmission, and Honda’s Sport Hybrid Super Handling All Wheel Drive torque-vectoring system. The system uses two electric motors to feed negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering, to enhance handling and grip.

The new supercar will be developed in the USA, using among others Honda’s Ohio R&D center.
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO Takanobu Ito said that the new NSX is scheduled to debut within three years. “Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency,” said Mr. Ito, who led the development of Acura’s first NSX supercar. “In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities.”

It will be produced in Ohio, USA, at a unique, advanced manufacturing operation. The original Honda/Acura NSX was built in Tochigi, Japan, from 1990 to 2005.
