Audi A8 goes hybrid

August 26,2011

The Audi A8 large luxury sedan adds another item to its list of technological advancements: a hybrid drivetrain. The A8 hybrid will go into production in 2012, with a four-cylinder gasoline engine under its hood. The gas engine will combine with a lithium-ion battery-powered electric-motor.

The A8 hybrid will have a combined 243 bhp and 480 Nm on tap. To conserve space, the electric motor slots into a space usually occupied by the eight-speed transmission’s torque converter—a multi-plate clutch takes its place.

The car is designated as a parallel hybrid, with each power source able to drive the car. The electric motor alone can propel the car at speeds up to 100 km/h. At a constant 59 km/h, the car travel up to 3 km on electric power alone. An EV setting gives priority to the electric motor.
To distinguish the A8 hybrid, the car rides on 18 or 19-inch turbine-style alloys, badges, and an exclusive Arctic Silver paint finish.
