BMW’s current 5 Series is an excellent return to form, styling-wise, for the company’s midsize offering. The classy yet sporty sedan now gets a bigger sibling in the form of the 5 Series Touring. And, no surprise—it looks just as good, if not better, than the sedan.
The new wagon is dubbed as an “Executive Tourer,” providing more versatility while still providing comfort and style. The Touring’s roofline and rear hatch blend well with the established 5 Series sedan styling themes, including a pronounced Hofmeister kink—but at the D-Pillar. Aesthetics seem to have been given a priority over cargo room. Luggage volume is 560 liters, expandable to 1670 via the 40:20:40 split-folidng rear seats. The tailgate glass can open separately.
This station wagon, like the four-door sedan, is based on the larger 7 Series platform, sharing many of its chassis and powertrain components. The Touring thus carries the optional dynamic damper control, which can adjust suspension firmness from the cockpit. The rear axles has self-leveling air suspension.
In the 535i Touring, power is provided by a twin-turbo straight-six engine with 306 bhp. Transmission is the eight-speed sport automatic. BMW’s EfficientDynamics package is standard—active air flaps and brake energy regeneration help the car squeeze more mileage out of its fuel. Likewise, the doors, hood, front side panels, suspension bits, and many parts of the engine are constructed from aluminum to cut weight.
