DTM dreams at the Clark Speedway

By William Herrera August 02,2013

There are three letters known the world over, that represents the most popular international touring car racing series: D-T-M, or “Deutsche Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft” (German Touring Car Championship to us English speaking folks).

DTM began back in 1984, with cars slightly modified from their stock counterparts, but these slowly graduated into high-tech, purpose-built touring cars by 1996. Now, with cars featuring updated technology at relatively reasonable cost, the DTM is now regarded as the pinnacle of touring cars, and is now one of Europe’s leading sports events.

The Philippines’ DTM revival was conceptualized in 2012 by friends Francis Aguila and Miguel Dizon. They had the idea to entice fellow BMW and Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts to race their cars in a safe and friendly environment. The first race was held at the Batangas Racing Circuit, and the second leg was held recently at the Clark Speedway.

The grid featured the rivalry of the Mercedes-Benz 190E and the BMW E30 3 series, including the legendary M3.

George Apacible and Paolo Arespacochaga, both driving a E30 325i BMW, raced side by side, neither giving an inch, until in the final corner of the final lap, when Paolo overtook George for the win. Patrick Chan’s BMW M3, Miguel Dizon’s Benz 190E Cosworth, and Bernard Sy’s BMW 325i duked it out for 3rd place, and in the end Patrick took the last step on the podium.

The Clark International Speedway will host the final two legs of the DTM PH cup on September 29 and on November 24.
