Cars We Don’t Want to Have: Hyundai Starex Hearse

August 27,2010

What makes an ideal hearse? If you exclude our personal must-have feature, Ghostbusters livery, we can only think of three: easy loading, easy unloading, and ability to haul, er, ash. We spotted a new trend on our journey south last weekend: van hearses. One was a Hyundai Starex, the other a Toyota Hi-ace.

The logic behind this particular use of our favorite passenger workhorses is impeccable: these vans have large tailgates, plenty of unobstructed room, and have fuel-efficient diesel engines to boot. The aforementioned convoys were going at a decent clip on the highway, courtesy of their more-than-sufficient torque. Beth Lee’s Urvan, Ur Business program may have a new market here.

The economics between a brand-new Korean or Japanese van, counting reliability, fuel efficiency, and the ease of conversion may spell the demise of previous favorites like the Mercedes E-Class and El Dorado. So it seems that many of us might not get that last ride in a Cadillac after all.
