The Mitsubishi Outlander has been a steady if not exactly sizzling member of Mitsubishi’s stable of crossovers (MMC claiming it invented the term with this car). Now a new-generation Outlander is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Strangely, it does not carry the family Evolution look carried by the current Lancer and ASX, and thus indicates another change in direction for Mitsubishi styling.
Mitsubishi says the car will be similar in size to the current Outlander, with a “Solid-Safe-Simple” and “engineer’s car” design brief. Interior will have soft-touch finish, with a tilt-telescoping steering wheel. Full third-row seating, flat cargo area, available active cruise control, dual-zone aircon, and power tailgate are the key features.
Initial engine choices (in Europe at least) will be the 2.0-liter MIVEC gasoline or 2.2 MIVEC diesel. Six-speed automatics with auto stop and go will be available. Driving efficiency indicator will be on some models. A plug-in hybrid is planned for 2013 onwards. Russia will be the first to sell the new Outlander in summer, followed by Japan, Asia, and other markets.
Here’s hoping Mitsubishi keeps the excellent handling of the Outlander intact.
