An Elantra hatch by any other name–Hyundai i30: First photos

September 12,2011

The Hyundai i30 didn’t make much of splash in the Philippines, despite winning its category in the Car of the Year awards. Its chassis and diesel engine proved to be its assets, while its chief liability is its bland, almost invisible looks.

The next-generation i30, set to premiere at Frankfurt this week, sets that right with the styling made familiar by the Tucson, Sonata, and Elantra. The i30, although primarily for the European market, was also known as the Elantra Touring.

According to Hyundai’s Chief Designer at its Europe studios, Thomas Bürkle: “The new-generation i30 is recognisable thanks to the Hyundai family face with its signature hexagonal-shaped front grille and the jewel-like design of the headlamps, together with distinctive daytime running lights. These lights present an angular shape within a more softly-edged recess, adding a strong personality to the vehicle, as well as a sense of refinement and luxury.”

The Elantra has been a success for Hyundai Asia Resources, and a nicely-styled hatchback version would no doubt boost sales even further.
