Who Bangs? Maserati does, with its new Kubang SUV

September 14,2011

If you thought the Porsche Cayenne was a travesty, wait till you read about the Maserati Kubang. The company’s first foray into the SUV market, the Kubang SUV is positioned as a high-end, performance wagon.

Just as the Cayenne was co-developed with VW, the Kubang also has mixed parentage. Maserati parent Fiat already owns quite a bit of offroader technology in the Jeep brand, so it’s no surprise that Jeep is prominently mentioned as a donor for the platform. Maserati claims that all else: style, engine, suspension, brakes, handling, and performance will be “100% Maserati.” The Kubang is styled in the vein of the Infiniti FX, with decidedly un-Jeep like curves. Whether it can tackle the rough stuff as well as a Jeep (which the Cayenne can) is still undisclosed.

The Kubang will feature an eight-speed automatic transmission, and of course, a Ferrari engine. Take that, Porsche and Eterniti!
