AirAsia Partners with Land Rover for Rainforest Challenge

November 02,2011

Land Rover Philippines (LRPhils Motors Inc.), in partnership with AirAsia Inc., (Philippines) will be sending the Team AirAsia-Land Rover Philippines to the Rainforest Challenge (RFC) of Malaysia in Terengganu, Malaysia on December 3-12, 2011 in support for the development of Philippine Motorsports. The ten-day RFC is considered as one of the world’s longest and toughest 4×4 off-road adventure competitions.

“Team AirAsia-Land Rover Philippines is led by the multi-awarded off-roading father and son duo “Typhoon” Larry Mendiola as driver and Hirryan Mendiola as co-driver and winchman. The team placed First Runner-Up in the 2010 RFC and will be one of the top contenders this year.

LRPhils Motors Inc. is the only importer-distributor in the country that continually supports Philippine motorsports.

“We believe that Filipinos have the talent to excel globally and especially in a sport such as off-roading,” said LRPhils Motors Inc. Executive Director, Marc Soong.

“Time and again, the Filipino has proven his dominance in the international 4×4 arena, and in no less than the Malaysian RFC, the longest and arguably the hardest and most unpredictable rainforest challenge. It’s also our pleasure to announce that we have AirAsia on board as our official partner in this venture. We are fortunate to have a partner who equally believes in Philippine motorsports and Land Rover,” he added.

“AirAsia has constantly dedicated itself to supporting sports both here and abroad. We believe that the Land Rover Philippine team will give their best in their quest for the title in the Rainforest Challenge of Malaysia as they have shown in the past competitions. They have the full support of the AirAsia family,” said Maan Hontiveros, CEO, AirAsia, Inc. (Philippines).

The Mendiolas will be driving a Land Rover Defender 90, powered by a 3.9 liter V8 petrol engine. The Defender 90 is designed with brilliant simplicity and is known worldwide for its unrivaled strength and legendary off-roading ability. It has been made to withstand the rigors of the toughest off-road competitions in the world.

This year, Team AirAsia-Land Rover Philippines is a team to watch out for in the Malaysian RFC after ranking first runner-up in last year’s competition.

“AirAsia joining the team is a major development. We get two major brands to support Philippine Motorsports. We finished first runner-up last year and we hope to do better this year,” said RFC Representative (Philippines) Mr. Robby Consunji.

The team recently competed in the China Sanya International Rainforest Challenge (CIRFC) where they grabbed the “First Entry Vehicle Award” and 12th Place over-all.

Team AirAsia-Land Rover Philippines is also supported by Timberland and MAA General Assurance Phils. Inc.
