The Spanish Grand Prix was an exciting bit of wall-to-wall racing complete with a nailbiting finish, and there’s another reason to be excited about the race weekend. The Philippines’ best hope for a Formula One seat, Marlon Stockinger, took second place during the first race of the GP3 race held the same weekend.
Stockinger started from fifth on the grid and moved up to fourth at the start. AFter two cars in front were penalized for jump starting the race, he was promoted to second. He eventually finished 2.6 seconds behind the race winner. Stockinger is the first Philippine racer to finish on the podium in a major European single-seater race series and at a Formula One race weekend.
Said Stockinger: “When you start in the top five everything is always possible. The boys worked hard to give me a good car and it’s great that I finished on the podium in the first race of the season. There was a bit of chaos at the start with the jump-starting cars, but after that it wasn’t too hectic for me.”
Stockinger was unable to finish well in the second race, which started with a reverse grid. He finished 19th out of 21.
