June 08,2012

Honda Cars Philippines launched the all-new Pilot SUV and Odyssey MPV in its fourth round of major launches this year, in a bid to strengthen its lineup. The Pilot and Odyssey have built a reputation for being the most comfortable and well thought-out American-style large SUV and MPV.

The Pilot reportedly combines the off-roading capability of an SUV with the comfort of a minivan. It carries eight passengers in three rows of seats. Pilot uses the familiar 3.5-liter iVTEC V6 with variable cylinder management that can operate in three and four-cylinder mode to improve fuel efficiency. Power is 254bhp and torque 347Nm. The Pilot uses a five-speed automatic combined with a four-wheel drive system.

Pilot measures 4875mm long, 1995mm wide, and 1845mm tall, on a 2775mm wheelbase. Curb weight is a hefty 2087kg. The large SUV uses a monocoque chassis with MacPherson struts up front and mutli-link setup at the rear. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard.

Pilot’s interior seats eight in three rows of leather seats. Front seats are power adjustable, and the climate control splits its controls into three zones for driver and navigator, and second row onwards. Convenience features include Bluetooth phone connectivity, backup camera with sensors, front sensors, eight-inch color monitor, seven-speaker audio with 2GB hard drive.

Front and side airbags, curtain airbags, ABS and EBD brakes, and stability assist are standard. The second and third row features Isofix child-seat mounts.

Interestingly, the Pilot includes an integrated tow hitch, and is capable of towing 2045kg. It is priced at P2,600,000.

Odyssey, returning to the Philippine market after the innovative but short-lived Accord-based swing-door first generation, is a large minivan with room for eight. Odyssey checks in 5152mm long, 2011 mm wide, with a long 3000mm wheelbase.

Odyssey also uses a version of the 3.5-liter V6 with variable cylinder management. Power is 248bhp and torque 343 Nm. Power goes through a five-speed automatic to the front wheels.

As befits a premium minivan, doors and tailgate are power-actuated, with anti-pinch function. Front seats are motorized, and the third row features 60:40 split-fold function. Leather seating is standard. Three-zone aircon allows climate settings for driver, front passenger, and second-row passengers. Other features include a cooler box, backup camera with sensors, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, sunroof, an eight-inch multi-information display, cruise control, sunroof, 2GB hard drive for audio, with seven speakers including a subwoofer.

Safety features include dual front airbags, side curtain for all three rows, ABS, EBD, and stability assist. Second and third row seats have Isofix mounting points for child seats. With all those features, the Odyssey is priced at P2,800,000, with the usual additional P25,000 charge for the White Diamond paint.
