All-new Mercedes S-Class first photos

Mercedes-Benz wants to reclaim the title of “world’s best car,” long held by the S-Class, before being challenged by the likes of BMW, Audi, and Lexus. Mercedes has released specs and photos of its all-new S-Class ultra-luxury sedan. The new car is reportedly safer, brawnier, and more luxurious than ever, while still being more efficient and environmentally friendly.

The new car is the world’s first to be lit entirely by LED technology, dispensing entirely with light bulbs. With adjustable intensity, they automatically dim the taillights at night or when waiting at traffic lights. 500 LEDs are on board, with 56 in the headlamps, 35 in the back, and up to 300 in the interior. A stereo camera and radar sensors help detect road hazards.

Propulsion is via a new generation of engines. The 2.2-liter inline-four in the S 300 Bluetec hybrid with a brawny 500 Nm of torque and 200bhp. 0-100km/h acceleration is 7.6 seconds while still delivering more than 25 liters/km. There’s also a 3.0 diesel and a 3.5 gasoline engine, all the way up to a 4.7 liter V8 in the S500, with 455hp and 700Nm, good for 4.8 seconds from 0-100 km/h.

The suspension uses a stereo camera to detect road conditions and change damping accordingly. The interior promises premium materials, roomier accommodations, and some stylistic flair. The car has been developed first as a long-wheelbase version, in a nod to the Chinese, Japanese and American markets, where the car is usually chauffeur driven.

Power-reclining rear seats feature massage and cooling functions. Touchscreens are present front and rear, with individual climate control and even an active “perfume” system to dissipate odors, perfect for when Tony Stark decides to order a cheeseburger on his way to a presscon. The sound system is by German high-end audio specialist Burmester.
