Ferrari recalls 458 Italia after cars burst into flames

September 02,2010

Ferrari has one hot car in the mid-engined 570-bhp 458 Italia. As it turns out, it’s a little too hot. The company has recalled the model to correct a possible fire hazard. The culprit is an adhesive in the car’s heat shields. The heat shields separate the car’s wheel arch from the exhaust pipe. The plan is to rivet the heat shield in place of the adhesive.

Five cars experienced “thermal incidents” that caused the car to ignite, in the U.S., Britain, France, Switzerland, and China. In media reports, the company said that it would take a combination of extreme conditions to cause the car to ignite, including “heavy usage of the car, such as driving very fast down a twisty road or up a mountain.” With a 320 km/h top speed, that sounds rather likely. Who can forget the Ferrari that caught fire a couple of years ago on the SLEX?

Ferrari will recall all 1148 cars, each priced at $260,000. What’s your bet that Fernando Alonso’s car will be serviced before Felipe Massa’s?
