Volvo Cars has developed a new range of engines dubbed Drive-E (soon to be a Pixar movie, perhaps). The diesel version features new technology called i-Art (soon to be an Apple product, maybe). i-Art puts a computer on each injector, allowing individual monitoring of injection pressure instead of the traditional single pressure sensor in the common rail. Volvo calls it the second step in the diesel revolution, allowing for better fuel economy and lower emissions. Drive-E diesels will range from 120 to 230 hp.
The gasoline engines feature twincharging technology, using a supercharger for better low-end torque with a turbocharger kicking in as the airflow builds up. The gasoline engines will generate 140 hp to 300-plus hp.
Electric technology, such as Integrated Starter Generator, can be easily connected and the compact size of the four-cylinders means that an electric motor can be fitted in front or rear of the vehicle.
The engines will debut in the new S60, V60 and XC60. There will be a 306hp gasoline T6, a 245 hp T5 and a diesel with 181 hp. Engines will mate to a new 8-speed automatic. The engines were developed in house in Skövde, Sweden.
