Toyota USA launches new 4Runner and Tundra, shows design direction for trucks

The 4Runner has been part of Toyota’s lineup for nearly three decades—not bad for what began basically as a pickup with a rear shell. Toyota recently launched the fifth generation 4Runner, a seven-seat capable, body-on-frame SUV that has full offroad capability. The rugged new exterior design, as Toyota calls it, shows the possible design direction of all of Toyota’s future trucks, which may include the next generation Hilux and Fortuner.

That look includes a beefier front grille, smoked headlamps, color-keyed grille and a bumper with sharply cut inlays, with matching foglamps . Headlamps are projector-type, and the taillamps use LEDs. A Trail variant has been launched for those who want maximum off-road capability. It will have all the off-road control switches placed in the overhead console, plus a compass and outside temperature display. Inside, the soft-touch plastics surround an Optitron instrument panel that shows speedometer, tachometer, voltage, fuel, coolant temperature, and a multi-information trip computer

4Runner uses a 4.0-liter 270hp V6 shared with the FJ Cruiser. Drive is switchable from rear-wheel to full-time 4×4 with locking center differential, and a low-range transfer case. This will have a hood scoop and silver painted bumpers. Suspension uses double wishbones in front and a four-link setup at the rear. A center control absorber links the shock absorbers on opposite sides of the car to help it corner flatter and reduce bumps transmitted to the cabin.

Meanwhile, the all-new Tundra full-sized pickup, developed expressly for the American market, also debuts, with a design done by Toyota’s Calty Design Research centers in California and Michigan. The front design integrates hood and grille for a “chiseled and modern industrial image.” The grille is taller, and the bumpers features a three-piece design to allow for lower replacement costs. Fenders and wheel wells are squared off. The deck features an integrated spoiler to aid fuel efficiency. Taillamps “express a tool-like quality” for a tougher appearance.

Tundra’s interior features instruments with 3D metallic rings, with individual gauges and center-mounted information screen. The interior theme is “professional gear,” with unique driver and passenger zones, metallic accents, and contrasting fabric. Perforated, pleated leather is available for the Texan rancher, with chrome seat and console accent badges. Saddle brown leather is available in the 1794 Edition variant.

Tundra is powered by a 4.0 liter V6 with 270hp, a 4.6-liter V8 with 310 hp, or a 5.7-liter V8 with 381hp.
