Belgian GP Qualifying report

By William Herrera August 25,2013

At Spa-Francorchamps, the Ardennes forest has once again lent its hand, to help jumble up the field for this weekend’s race.

Q1 started out in wet conditions, and everybody queued up at pit exit to make sure they can set a decent time. The Drag Reduction System was DRS disabled due to the weather conditions. Failing to make the cut were both Williams-Renault, both STR’s and Gutierrez’s Sauber with Pic’s Catherham bringing up the rear. Both Marussia’s had their best qualifying in recent memory, placing 15th & 16th.

The second qualifying session showed damp conditions, and the drivers went out on slicks, Ferrari went for the prime tires while Kimi opted for the option tires. For a while it seemed that the usual suspects would move on to Q3, but the surprise of the day was Jenson in his McLaren moving on to final qualifying.

Q3 had all the top runners queue again at the pit exit before the green light came on. Rain caught out all the drivers, except for di Resta who stayed back in the pits. As the rest of the field came back in to change their slick tires, Paul went out and set his time on intermediates. Di Resta was on provisional pole for some time, but the drying track, quickly demoted Paul down to 5th.

Rosberg took provisional pole, but was quickly overtaken by Webber. Then Sebastian Vettel on his final lap grabbed the top spot, but that too didn’t last as Lewis drove the Mercedes AMG to his 4th  consecutive pole, and 5th for the year.

With a 70% chance of rain predicted for the race, it could may well be another race of attrition.

So will Lewis make two it in a row? Or will Sebastian take the top step? Will Kimi be able to spring a surprise? Or will Fernando take his 3rd win of the season?
