After a great comeback with the Cruze sedan, Chevrolet plans to introduce a hatchback version next year. The new car (or at least a “show version”) will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, with sales starting in 2011.
The hatchback will add a welcome bit of style to the car’s profile, and will still be capable of carrying 400 liters of cargo. It will also feature a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Whether it will be enough to pry sales from Subaru’s Impreza depends on what kind of hardware is under the hood—and right now, the 1.8-liter inline-four is the only (underwhelming) choice.
The Cruze is already Chevrolet’s number-one passenger car in terms of global sales. China alone has sole 90,000 units in 2010. The new hatchback is a must to stay competitive in Europe, where, according to GM, 65% of compact car sales are hatchbacks.
