Hyundai’s subcompact minivan: ix20

September 08,2010

With Toyota and Honda releasing new B-segment (subcompact) MPVs in the Philippines and in Europe, Hyundai can’t be far behind. Indeed, it will launch the ix20 MPV at the Paris Motor Show. Sales start in 2011; with Hyundai’s relentless expansion in the Philippines, the company just might launch it here. The ix moniker is Hyundai’s new designation for SUVs; the Tucson is known elsewhere as the ix35. (We think the shameless aping of German nomenclature that is increasingly becoming meaningless is a pity; give us names, for crying out loud!)

The first sketch of the ix20 shows a “dynamic, sportier profile in line with Hyundai’s reputation as a modern, progressive automaker.” The “20” part of the car’s name implies that it will be built off the new i20’s (aka Getz) platform. The German-designed ix20 will be displayed at the Paris Motor Show in September.
