Want a car that can accelerate like an Audi R8 but has the comfort of a Rolls Royce? Does Bentley have a car for you. Bentley is of course known for large, extremely fast, and extremely luxurious sedans, and this is embodied in its flagship Continental GT. The Crewe, England, company has unveiled the all-new Continental GT.
The new Continental is a four-seat coupe that packs a W12 engine, good for 567 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. Acceleration is worthy of a musclecar, with 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. 160 km/h arrives in 10.2 seconds, and top speed is 318 km/h. In late 2011, a new high-output 8-cylinder engine will also be available, for a 40% reduction in emissions.
As before, propulsion is via a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system. Torque split will be 40:60 front:rear, compared with the previous 50:50 bias, to reduce understeer.
The GT’s body uses new construction techniques including “aluminum super forming,” where aluminum panels for the front wing and trunk lid are heated to nearly 500 degrees Celcius before being shaped by air pressure. No seams or welding are required for the sharply-sculpted front wings, for example. Despite the more upright Bentley grille, drag coefficient is a not-unreasonable 0.33Cd. Styling cues including front LED bar and “floating” rear LED lamps. 20-inch wheels are standard, with 21″s available as options.
The cabin is expected to deliver the hand-crafted quality that the brand is known for. Adding modern touches are a touchscreen system with 30GB memory, navigation and Google Maps, and a Naim audio system.
