Why can’t we have compacts this pretty? The French certainly can, as evidenced in Citroën’s new DS4 hatchback. The DS4 is a slightly-raised compact that carries a healthy helping of French style.
The DS4 features pronounced fender flares, LED running lamps, and a nicely-shaped chrome frame around the side windows. Inside, a panoramic windshield that reaches up to the front part of the roof imparts a widescreen view of the road—maybe akin to watching a movie in 3D. There’s seating for five and a 370-liter luggage capacity. Selectable warning tones, from “Classic” to “Jungle Fantasy” to “Urban Rythmik” are featured, as well as color-changing instrumentation.
Two diesels and three gasoline engine, from 110 to 200 bhp, will be available. The gasoline engines were co-developed with BMW, and are related to the engines powering the Mini Cooper lineup. The DS4 will debut at the Paris Motor Show, with (European) sales starting in 2011.
Killer features: 200-bhp engine shared with the Mini Cooper S
Neat touches: “Urban Rythmik” warning tones
Why we can’t have it: No Citroen dealer here; sister company Peugeot closed shop a few years ago
