James Hunt’s 1977 McLaren F1 car up for auction

September 17,2013

RK Motors Collector Car Auctions (RKMCCA) will offer collector car enthusiasts the first-ever opportunity to bid on James Hunt’s iconic1977 McLaren M26 (Lot #3032). The legendary racecar will be in the spotlight at the RKMCCA auction at the Charlotte Convention Center, October 31 to November 3.

Steeped in Formula 1 history, this legendary McLaren earned Hunt’s last-ever Formula 1 win at the Japanese Grand Prix in 1977. Hunt will be featured in the Ron Howard film ‘Rush’, which chronicles the ultra-competitive relationship between Hunt and Niki Lauda during the tumultuous 1976 Formula 1 season.

The M26, chassis number 3, is powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV 90º V8 that pumps out an incredible 525 horsepower at 10,600RPMs. The M26 has been beautifully preserved and is race- ready, capable of 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, and a top speed of 195mph.

“We’re proud to present this unique investment opportunity for any collector who is passionate about one of the world’s most remarkable chapters of racing history,” said Bill Mathews, vice president of auctions, RKMCCA. “With Rush scheduled for national release later this  month, the adrenaline-charged saga of Hunt and rival Lauda will no longer belong only to motorsports enthusiasts – it will introduce new generations to the pure joy – and the agony – of racing.”

The November RKMCCA auction will feature hundreds of collector cars representing multiple categories of investment-grade vehicles, from America’s favorite muscle cars to rare European entries.
