Ferrari launches Virtual Academy simulator for PC

September 14,2010

Aside from taking victory in the Italian Grand Prix, thanks to a blistering drive from Fernando Alonso, Ferrari took the occasion to launch its first “online virtual simulator,” the Ferrari Virtual Academy. The computer program, essentially a high-tech computer game, allows users to virtually drive the Ferrari F10 Formula One race car.

The program is reportedly based on the simulators used by the Prancing Horse’s own race drivers. The simulators reproduce the actual car’s behavior using different tires, aerodynamic and engine settings. Videos captured by the drivers using a helmet cam were used to replicate the neck-straining G forces featured on the Virtual Academy.

The Windows PC-program will enable virtual drives on the Fiorano circuit, with Mugello and Nurburgring available later on. Users can record their own time and take part in an online tournament, with the eventual winner getting a trip to Maranello, where an exclusive Ferrari Driver Academy course awaits them. The program can be purchased at www.ferrarivirtualacademy.com at a price of €14.90 for the first release, the Fiorano Circuit, and €9.90 for the following releases with the Mugello and Nürburgring circuits. Team orders are optional.
