Electrics Attack, Part 2: Audi A1 e-tron

September 18,2010

Not to be outdone from the folks at Stuttgart, Audi is launching its own line of electric-powered minicar, based on the A1. The A1 e-tron combines electric propulsion with a range-extending internal combustion engine.
The A1 e-tron uses a 100bhp-electric motor to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 128 km/h. In this mode, it is a zero-emissions vehicle; the A1 e-tron can travel 50 km in pure electric mode, sufficient for city driving. When the lithium-ion batteries are discharged, a singe-rotor Wankel (yes, a rotary!) powers up to provide recharging power, at 15kW. Using the rotary engine, the e-tron can go an additional 198 km. Fuel efficiency is 63 km/liter.

20 of the e-tron cars will take to the streets of Munich in a pilot project. The Bavarian city will install 100 electric recharging stations, all supplied using renewable energy sources. Data on car usage will be collected using a smartphone application that the users will carry. Germany aims to have one million electric vehicles on its roads by 2020.
