As Supertyphoon “Yolanda” left a wide trail of destruction on her wake, the motoring sector is once again scrambling to donate time, effort and funds to assist in the relief effort. Petron Corp. has announced that over 500 participating service stations will accept donations like food, water, clothing, medicine and toiletries under its “Sagip Alalay” program. Donated goods will be sent to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for distribution to the victims.

Likewise, the establishment of Peugeot Philippines marketing and communications director Dong Magsajo, the Last Home Resto Bar, will be accepting donations at its Ortigas Home Depot address. Jaguar-Land Rover Philippines’ Marc Soong committed to donate P100,000 for every vehicle sold during a sales event.

Philippine Star columnist Cito Beltran and Top Gear Philippines publisher Jeff Reyes are reportedly organizing an effort to help deliver relief goods to the area by engaging multiple publications and car companies. Foton Philippines has reportedly committed a pickup truck for this endeavor.

No doubt, there will be many more efforts that will come to light in the next few days and weeks. Though this is the time when car companies and other corporations are planning their Christmas parties, we are urging them to drastically simplify their intended gatherings or even not have them at all. Instead of spending for lavish celebrations, it would be better to donate the funds intended for luxurious food, gifts and raffle prizes to aid our countrymen who are in a fight for survival.

The people badly affected by this supertyphoon, noted as the strongest to ever hit the land, will need our help in the days and weeks ahead. Let us all assist in the relief effort.
