Call it the Tesla effect: now every carmaker and its sister want to showcase an electric supercar. Jaguar is the latest to follow in the footsteps of the SLS E-Cell and the Audi e-tron, launching the C-X75 “range-extended electric supercar concept car.”
The 75 signifies that this is in commemoration of the brand’s 75th anniversary. It follows the flowing form of the ill-fated XJ-220, but in a purer, more liquid shape. Designer Ian Callum says it is inspired by the D-Type from the 1950s and the 1966 XJ13 Le Mans prototype. It features a “central fuselage surrounded by prominent wheel arches.”
The C-X75 is capable of 330 km/h cruising and 0-100 km/h acceleration of 3.4 seconds. All this is courtesy of four very powerful electric motors, one for each wheel. Each motor produces 195 bhp and total torque of 1600Nm. The car can run in pure electric mode for 110 km on a six-hour charge. Torque can be independently varied to provide ultimate balance and grip. Inside, Jaguar uses innovative display screens with 3D-effect gauges. Not to mention, blue-lit honeycomb panels straight from “Tron.”
To extend the car’s range it also carries two micro gas turbines to generate electricity. The turbines recharge the lithium ion batteries, giving a total range of 900 km.
The C-X75 is built using an aluminum space frame, on which aluminum body panels are mounted. Carbon-fiber parts such as the diffuser and underbody Venturi tunnel provide downforce without protruding body appendages.
The C-X75 seems a couple of generations away from actual road-car production, but its technology and styling direction bode quiet well for the British (by way of Indian) luxury car company.
