Volkswagen has launched the all-new, seventh-generation Passat sedan and wagon at the Paris Motor Show.
The design brief resulted in “clean surfaces and an elegant yet imposing stance.” We expected more from design chief Walter de Silva, but in photos, the car looks distinctly undistinctive—ie, bland. That’s probably deliberate, as the car is meant for a global market and has to be appealing from Beijing to Brussels. The only distinctive touch we see is no longer unique—the LED running lights pioneered by sister brand Audi. Inside, the car features VW’s clean, ergonomic design, with premium-looking plastics and trim. The keyless go system can also open the trunk if the driver waves his foot at the back of the car—we can’t wait to see that on Youtube.
Engine choices include the thrifty yet powerful 1.4-liter twincharger engine, and 1.8 and 2.0 liter versions (208 bhp). There is also a 297 bhp 3.6-liter V6. Diesels options are a 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter. As demonstrated by the Guinness record-setting previous-generation model, the 1.6 can achieve remarkable fuel efficiency, up to a reported 29.2 km/liter. Each engine can be paired with a manual or dual-shift gearbox.
Safety features include auto braking similar to Volvo’s system, and—get this—auto acceleration if it detects an imminent rear collision, with a clear space ahead of the car. Optional is an electronic differential that can reduce understeer and improve traction.
The Passat is one of VW’s most successful models, selling over 15 million units in 37 years. The new version starts arriving in showrooms in 2011—perhaps even including the Philippines.
