Filipino Formula driver Marlon Stockinger outlines plans for 2014
In the recent sendoff party for the Formula Renault 3.5 World Series Driver, Filipino-Swiss Marlon Stockinger, he and his team outlined their plans for the 2014 season. This stretches from the season start on April 26-27 in Aragon, Spain, until the final race in Jerez, Spain, on Oct. 18-19. “It is safe to say that I’m … aiming to fight for the championship because that’s the only way to prove myself and obviously make the last step [to Formula One],” Stockinger said.
A notable stop in the 2014 calendar is Monaco, where the young Stockinger won his GP3 race back in 2012. With this victory, Marlon became the first Filipino to win in the principality.
Stockinger also touched on the event last year held in Manila, where Team Lotus F1 brought the team and a few cars for some demo runs. This was done to raise awareness of motorsports, and Formula One in particular. Marlon remarked: “To reach that goal of actually making it to F1, whether it is me or someone else, I think the most important thing is: As long as the sticker beside the name is the Philippine flag, then I will be really proud for myself or anyone who would be able to do it.”
The 2013 season had its ups and downs for Stockinger. He didn’t start out well, but about halfway through the season, the team was able to solve the car’s gremlins. From there, Marlon always finished in the Top 10, got a few rookie podiums, and he always finished in the points.
Tom Stockinger also took to the microphone and outlined his thoughts on how we, the Filipino people, can help not only Marlon but all aspiring drivers to achieve the goal of landing the much coveted F1 seat. “We don’t have to promote the sport because Formula One promotes itself. What we have to promote is the awareness that we could have a Filipino driver in Formula One,” said Tom.
Will we see Marlon land an F1 seat? With our help, this dream could fast become a reality.
