Tata Motors executive killed in plunge from Bangkok hotel

By Jason K. Ang January 28,2014

Tata Motors Managing Director Karl Slym, who headed the company’s operations except for the Jaguar-Land Rover brands, plunged to his death from the 22nd floor of the Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok on January 26. Mr. Slym was a crucial part of the executive team, as he was leading an effort to restore profitability at the automotive division of the conglomerate. His death caused a decline in the value of the company’s stock. It may take more than six months to find a suitable replacement for him. Mr. Slym was hired by Tata in 2012, after a 17-year stint at General Motors. He was in charge of, among other things, boosting the flagging popularity of the Tata Nano, initially marketed as the world’s cheapest car.

Thai police said that evidence points to suicide as the cause of the death.
