California Superbike School in Philippines: cornering confidence at 200kph

45 hardcore Filipino motorbike riders brought their riding skills to a higher level after undergoing riding skills training with Australian coaches from world-renowned California Superbike School (CSS) at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga last February 7-8.  Tuason Racing School (TRS) organized the event in partnership with BMW Motorrad, Bridgestone Philippines Alpinestars, Hitchpro, C! Magazine.

Mounted on different high-end superbikes, the Filipino riders experienced theoretical and on-track training with the Australian team of CSS coaches led by Steve Brouggy. CSS was founded by Keith Code in the United States 33 years ago and has trained more than 150,000 riders around the world, even producing champions in the prestigious MotoGP race events. CSS is present in Europe, Australia, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Before, Filipino riders went to the US, Europe or Australia to experience CSS rider training. This year, TRS brought it to the Philippines to provide an opportunity for Filipino riders to hone their skills and promote safer riding of fast, high technology machines. This is similar to TRS’ programs for circuit racing and supercar training.

Brouggy holds a Level 4 (Master) coaching status in the CSS, and is the only authorized trainor of the CSS without Code in attendance. He is considered one of the seven most highly-trained instructors on the planet. Brouggy engaged the students in classroom discussion and on-track sessions for the Level 1 and Level 2 courses dealing with throttle control, proper steering techniques, determining reference points on the track, racing lines, and correct braking. Together with a team of seven CSS certified instructors, Brouggy kept the riders busy to ensure that proper riding techniques were digested by the participants with safety as everyone’s primary concern.

The students were a mixture of beginners and experienced circuit racers, including Philippine Superbike champion Raniel Resuello. Participating students found themselves discovering new techniques from the CSS that may serve as their “secret formula” in winning the MotoGP and other world motorbike championship races. Rider celebrities Ding Dong Dantes and Richard Gutierrez also came in their leather racing suits to experience the CSS riding school training.

At the end of the training sessions, each participant was given the CSS certification for Level 1 and Level 2 training.

Due to the succesful turn out of the event, CSS and its Philippine organizing counterpart TRS  is optimistic that the CSS training experience will again beheld in the Philippines at least on a once-a-year basis.
