The victim count of runaway buses continues to climb. On Saturday, a passenger bus plowed through seven vehicles along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City after it lost its brakes.

The Mayamy Transport bus rammed into the road’s enter island, damaged its grille an blocked the opposite lane going to Batasan Road.

Police Officer 2 Allan Florendo of the Quezon City Police Traffic Sector 5 told INQUIRER.net that the bus going to Regalado lost control and crashed into the vehicles. Florendo said the Mayamy Transport bus, bearing the plate number TXW 386, came from the Elliptical Road.

According to the passengers of a UV Express shuttle van, the bus driver and conductor fled from the scene. A motorcycle rider involved in the multiple collision was reportedly in critical condition. The injured were brought to East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City.

Commonwealth Avenue earned the nickname “killer highway” as a high number of casualties and injuries have been taking place on the road. In 2010, the MMDA recorded 21 deaths and 608 injuries in more than 2000 accidents on Commonwealth Avenue. The MMDA imposed a 60 kph speed limit on the road in an attempt to curb accidents, and the agency also designated two lanes for passenger buses.

Last December, a bus operated by Don Mariano Transit crashed and fell off the Skyway elevated highway, killing 20. On February 7, a bus with markings of GV Florida Transport Inc. fell off a ravine in Bontoc town in Mountain Province, killing 14.
