A day at the Porsche Museum

PORSCHE 911 2.7 RS is the original car that stared a legendary lineage. Introduced in 1972 as a homologation run for Porsche’s Group 4 racing category, the RS featured wider rear fenders to accommodate the now iconic Fuchs wheels, bigger brakes and firmer suspension, and was first to feature Nikasil cylinder liners, allowing Porsche to bore out the engine from the
original 2.2 to 2.7 liters, developing 210 HP. Porsche purity at its best!

Being a die-hard Porsche 911 fanatic, a trip last year to the Frankfurt Motor Show, where Porsche unveiled the Type 901 prototype 50 years ago, a side trip to Stuttgart suburb Zuffenhausen was a must. The goal? To finally see the new Porsche Museum, a place I consider a spiritual home of sorts.

The Porsche Museum is located adjacent to the old factory buildings of the main Porsche production facility. Getting off the S6 line of the S-Bahn railway, I hop out at the Neuwirtshaus/Porscheplatz station to see the  impressive, modern façade of the Porsche Museum. I had seen the construction of the new building back in 2006 but the new structure was completed in December 2008, with doors officially opening in January 2009. I waited four years before I can see the fruition of the ultramodern building.

Since the 911 was celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Porsche Museum rolled out a special, once-in-a-lifetime display focusing on the 911 and all its variants, both race and road. I consider myself lucky in many ways but to be here at the Mecca of all things 911 and Porsche, and witness this special display was indeed divine providence.

PORSCHE is the singlemost successfulmanufacturer in the LeMans
24 Hour Race, having wonmore class and overall wins combined than
any other manufacturer. This 911 GT1/98 Le Mans champ, CarNo. 26,
was the overall victor in 1998 as the 911 GT1/98 took the first two
places in the famed 1998 running of the event.
