Superbikes at Sepang: Malaysia hosts FIM Superbike World Championship

By William Herrera March 07,2014

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has been the home of motorsports in Malaysia since the circuit and the country hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1999. SIC is the organizer and promoter of both Formula 1 and MotoGP. This year, SIC is launching another premier event to join their already long list of international races: the FIM Superbike World Championship (SBK).

Sepang will play host to round 6 of the 14-race 2014 calendar, which kicked off in Philip Island in Melbourne last February 23.

Speaking to the media, Datuk Razlan Razali said “ We are proud to be part of another world class event. We are confident that the SBK would grow to become another success story for SIC and Malaysia – Just like the Formula 1 and MotoGP World Championship ”

Sepang took on the SBK due to the strong interest of bike races in the country. Malaysia has millions of motorcycle owners, who are a huge potential fan base for the SBK and MotoGP. Similar to its more illustrious counterparts, Formula 1 and MotoGP, the Sepang World Superbike Championship will be a three-day event. Practice sessions will be held on Friday and during Saturday, there will be two qualifying sessions, while on Sunday will be the race proper.

BMW, Kawasaki, MV Agusta, Aprilia, Suzuki, Bimota and Honda are some of the prominent manufacturers participating in SBK.

“Tickets for the Sepang World Superbike Championship are already on sale and we are currently offering fans a special early bird promotion for tickets, where fans can save up to RM30 for purchases before April 15,” according to SIC Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Edward Lim.

Calling all Superbike fans: there is no better time to head over to Malaysia than on June 6-8, to catch all the action of the Sepang World Superbike World Championship, live.
