Hyundai has introduced the all-new Sonata sedan at the New York International Auto Show. The seventh-generation features a new design dubbed “Fluidic Sculpture 2.0,” a stiffer body structure; better ride quality; and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. The Korean company says it took cues from the upscale Genesis sedan in designing and providing technology for the midsized Sonata.
The new exterior comes with a new grille, a continuation of the coupe-like profile of the previous generation, and pronounced rocker panels underscored by chrome trim. Hyundai recorded a 0.27 drag coefficient, lower than any non-hybrid midsize. LED daytime running lights and a rear lip spoiler provide some accents. U.S. models will feature 16 or 18-inch alloy wheels.
The interior features an 8-inch display panel, flat-bottomed steering wheel, red accent piping, and available 400-watt Infinity sound system. The Sonata Sport 2.0T gets paddle shifters and sport instrument cluster with needles that rest at the six o’clock position. With the enlarged passenger and cargo volume, the Sonata is now classified as a ‘large’ sedan by the US EPA. Its main rivals are all classified as ‘midsize.’
Safety features include Lane Departure warning, blind spot warning, and adaptive cruise control.
Power is provided by a choice of four-cylinder engines. The 2.4-liter Theta II GDI in the SE, Limited and Sport models generates 185 hp and 241 Nm. Peak power has gone down slightly but the powerband has shifted downward for better responsiveness at low RPM. The turbo 2.0-liter Theta II GDI produces 245 hp and a meaty 353 Nm. With a smaller turbine and compressor wheel, Hyundai promises better responsiveness and more torque in the low and mid RPM range. Both engines are paired with six-speed automatic transmission. The midsize battle is heating up, what with the new Mazda6, refreshed Camry, and now the all-new Sonata.
