Nissan launches all-new SUV-inspired Navara pickup

By Jason K. Ang June 17,2014

Nissan has launched the all-new Navara pickup, the 12th generation of its workhorse vehicle. The new Navara will reportedly provide competitive fuel economy, easier operation, improved acceleration, and a more rigid and durable frame.

Body mass has been reduced, as has the roof height, while ground clearance and loading area both increase. Various body types will be available, in both narrow and wide variants, and king and double-cab models. Rear-wheel and four-wheel drive will be the drivetrain options.

The design is reportedly sportier and more emotional, with a smooth silhouette, high-beltline, and blacked-out B-pillar. Doors will feature dynamic convex and concave surfaces. The front section will have Nissan’s new trademark “V-motion” that flows from grille to front fender, boomerang-shaped lighting, and LED headlamps and daytime running lights. Savannah Yellow and Earth Bronze will be the new color choices.

Interior will have a more tactile steering wheel, aluminum-look finish, and real stitching on the seats. The cabin is more spacious and designed to be more comfortable, with better isolation from road and engine noise. Features that will be a first in the one-ton pickup segment will be rear vents for the aircon and push-button engine start.

The new pickup, called NP300 Navara, will feature a 2.5-liter DOHC inline-four diesel with up to 187hp and 450Nm, or a 2.5-liter gasoline engine. Nissan claims up to 11% improvement in fuel economy. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic with expanded gear ratio for wider range of speeds. Shift-on-the-fly 4×4 can engage while the pickup is running.

Several electronic assist features will be available, including stability control, hill descent control and hill start assist. The braking system can also assist as a form of limited-slip control.

“Since we built our first pickup in 1933, over 14 million customers around the globe have come to depend on a Nissan pickup to transport their families, workmates and cargo, sometimes in the toughest of circumstances, “explained Andy Palmer, Nissan’s Chief Planning Officer. “Nissan pickups are often the lifeblood of their communities, and they need a broader range of abilities than almost any other vehicle. Engineering a good one isn’t easy, but with the NP300 Navara, we’ve added to our accumulated 80 years of Pickup know-how, more comfort, convenience and SUV-inspired features, in-order to build a great one.“
