Optimus Prime ready to roll out via Uber

By Jason K. Ang June 19,2014

The taxi industry-disrupting Uber app, which allows users to call on a nearby car to pick them up, has added another class of vehicle to its lineup. This time, it’s Optimus Prime, the baritone-voiced, flame-jobbed, robot-transforming semi truck.

Unfortunately this is only for the US market for now, as Optimus will be in Phoenix, Arizona on June 19th, and Los Angeles on June 21st. The Uber app will have an “Autobots” option for those cities at certain times, allowing the user to call up the big truck. Uber says that “If you’re lucky enough to make contact with Optimus, he’ll roll out to your location for a 15-minute experience.” There’s only one (apparently the) Optimus Prime that will be going around to ferry Transformers fans.

In Makati, Uber offers its “UberBLACK” car service, using a Toyota Corolla Altis, Nissan Teana, or Ford Fiesta, with a base fare of P90.00 and P2.10 per minute plus P12.92 per km, with a minimum fare of P120.00

Uber was recently valued at $18 billion and has been causing distress to the taxi industry in some cities. Taxi drivers have been organizing protests against the mobile app.

Optimus Prime will star along with a whole garage of Chevrolet vehicles in the upcoming movie Transformers: Age of Extinction, as well as a couple of humans named Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz. The movie opens June 25 in the Philippines.
