BMW launches all-new X6 SUV

By Jason K. Ang June 20,2014

BMW has launched the second generation of its segment-bending X6 SUV, a four-door tall wagon that is styled like a coupe. The so-called “Sports Activity Coupe” gains a rear-wheel drive version for the first time.

BMW calls the new X6’s design even more extroverted, with a long hood, long wheelbase, short front overhang and cab-rearward passenger space. The front features a prominent X-shaped contour flanking the BMW twin-kidney grille. Foglamps are LED, with the headlamps being standard xenon units, upgradable to LED. The active aerodynamic aids have been turned into visible styling cues. These include air deflectors, and air intakes on the front apron, which can be opened and closed as needed. Aluminum running boards are optional.

The interior features the usual driver-centered cockpit with large twin main gauges, sporty three-spoke steering wheel, the iDrive wheel, and an attractive mix of high-gloss wood and leather. Aluminum trim is an option. LED lighting can be varied among blue, white, and orange. A free-standing 10-inch display panel is on the center of the instrument panel. A new xLine range allows buyers to customize the interior to their liking.

Power comes from a standard 300-hp twin-turbo inline-six. The X6 sDrive35i gets rear-wheel drive, the first for an X model. Optional engines are the 445-hp twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 in the xDrive50i. An 8-speed automatic is standard, while all-wheel drive is available.

The X6 has been a successful model for BMW, selling 250,000 units since its introduction. BMW X6 is built at the company’s Spartanburg, South Carolina factory. The car will be in US showrooms by late 2014.
