Ford has revealed the all-new Edge, the second generation of the midsize SUV. Previously a US-market only vehicle, the Edge will now be sold in Europe and the rest of the world. The all-new Edge has reportedly been designed from the ground up to be visually athletic and to be more fit for the European and world market.
Edge is one of Ford’s first crossovers, or SUVs built on passenger-car platforms. The new model will feature Adaptive Steering, which varies steering ratio according to vehicle speed. This makes parking easier, while helping stability at high speed. The European version will have active noise cancellation. The audio system will use onboard microphones to detect noise, and generate opposing sound waves to cancel out and suppress noise. A front split-view camera will help by providing a 180-degree view of the front when turning at junctions or when parking.
The car will be powered by a 2.0-liter Ecoboost turbo gasoline engine or a 2.7-liter Ecoboost V6 in America, making it the first Ford to offer Ecoboost as standard. The 2.0 generates 245hp, while the 2.7 V6 will top 300hp. In Europe will be a 2.0-liter Duratorq diesel engine in Europe, with maximum 208hp and 450Nm. A six-speed dual-clutch Powershift automatic will be available, with paddle-shift controls. Edge will feature full-time all-wheel drive. Independent rear suspension and high-strength steel will aid handling and ride comfort.
Edge will use LED headlamps, 3D effect LED taillamps, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Other technological features will include: hands-free tailgate, a new version of the Sync voice control system, adapative cruise control, active park assist (aka self-steering parallel parking), inflatable rear seatbelts, auto braking, lane keeping aid, and blind-spot warning.
The new Edge is expected to debut in Asia-Pacific by late 2015. Here’s hoping we get the diesel version.
