MotoGP 2014 Iveco Daily TT Assen: Perfection from Marquez

By William Herrera July 01,2014

Giacomo Agostini has held the record for winning the first eight races in the premier class, and since 1971, no one has come close—until now. The phenom from Spain, Marc Marquez has now added his name to the list, and judging from his form of late, he will eclipse the great Giacomo in Germany.

Aleix Espargaro of NGM Forward Racing was the surprise pole sitter and in second spot was defending champion Marc Marquez, while Dani Pedrosa in the other Repsol Honda took 3rd. Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi started in 9th and 12th, respectively. Vale gambled on his choice of tires, opting to use dry over wets, but a minute before the start it started to rain and he had no choice but to change and start from the pitlane.

Rain caused a delay in the start of the race, but as soon as it got going, Marquez was in a class of his own. He took the lead from the onset. Andrea Doviziso, on board his Ducati also made a cracking start, jumping from 7th to 2nd on the first lap.

As the track dried and the weather cleared up, the riders went dove into the pits to change bikes. For a while it seemed that Marquez would falter, having come out of the pits in 7th. But after only one lap, Marc was already back up to 2nd behind Dovizioso, and eventually took over the lead on lap 16.

Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo found conditions difficult and was not even a factor for this race, finishing down in 17th position. His teammate Valentino Rossi made up for his earlier gamble by fighting through the field and finishing in 5th , and with it the much needed points to maintain his championship standing. Vale is now tied with Dani for 2nd on the standings with 128 points.

With his 8th consecutive win, Marc Marquez now lords it over the rest of the field with 200 points, and should he maintain his form, could well win the championship before the season ends in Valencia.

MotoGP now heads to Sachsenring, for the German GP on July 13.

Will Marquez continue his winning ways? Or will someone be able to step up and give him a fight for the 2014 title?
