Move over, Bentley. Volvo will reportedly launch the world’s most powerful SUV when the all-new XC90 debuts this year. Lest you think that it marks a change from family-friendly car to gas-guzzler, the new Volvo will on the contrary be fuel efficient and low-emissions.
How does 400hp, 640Nm and 60 g/km of carbon dioxide emissions sound? That’s what the new Drive-E engine will offer. The Drive-E engines are all four-cylinder, with “world beating fuel economy.” Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group: “In the past you could either have power or low CO2emissions. But with the all-new XC90 you can have both.”
The top variant of XC90 will bear the “Twin Engine” badge, meaning it will be a plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid. The gasoline part is a 2.0-liter with supercharger (driven by the crankshaft) for low-end power, and a turbocharger (driven by the exhaust gases) for top-end power. Electric motors drive the rear wheels to provide four-wheel traction. The combined electric and gasoline output will be 400hp and 640Nm. Pure electric driving range is about 40km.
Other variants will carry the 225 hp, 470 Nm twin-turbo diesel called the D5, and the 190 hp, 400 Nm turbo diesel dubbed D4.
XC90 will use Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecutre platform that allows for good interior space even with the bulky battery pack.
“Since our new SPA technology is designed from the start to accommodate electrification technologies, the Twin Engine installation does not compromise luggage or passenger space,” said Dr. Mertens.
