Comic-Con 2014: Hotwheels builds life-size ‘Darth Car’ for its Star Wars line

By Jason K. Ang July 29,2014

The annual Nerdvana known as the San Diego Comic-Con has come up with its fair share of surprises and delights for fans of comics, movies, and television. Toy companies also like to use Comic-Con to launch their new offerings. This year, Mattel launched its line of Star Wars-based toy cars. As the hype and fan love for everything Star Wars builds up as the new movie is taking shape, there has never been a better time for the Hotwheels company to show off its new cars. These include a Chewbacca flatbed truck, R2D2 hot rod, and Luke Skywalker sports car.

At Comic-con, Mattel unveiled a full-size Darth Vader car. Built off the chassis of a Corvette, the Darth Car features a Vader grille, helmet shaped roof, lightsaber-shaped side pipes, and light-up engine cover plate. The Darth Car even emits smoke when the dome-like cabin opens. And of course, it breathes just like the Sith Lord himself.

Comic-Con attendees can buy the car in special lightsaber packaging. The rest of us saps will have to wait till October to buy the cars in regular boxes.
