Ford Philippines will soon display, and likely sell, a few units of the all-new Mustang in its 50 Year Limited Edition guise. The all-new Ford Mustang coincides with the 50th year of the nameplate, and Ford has designed a special edition to highlight that anniversary.
The Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition is based on the GT fastback, with nearly all options included. The only choices are: manual or automatic transmission, and the color. The latest take on the original pony car will be available in Wimbledon White, the color of the first Mustang built, or Kona Blue, both exclusive to this car.
Ford has added trim to bring some 1960s pizzazz to the sleek new shape of the new Mustang. Chrome bezels surround the base of the three taillamp blades, similar to the 1962 design proposal by Gale Halderman that was adapted for the 1964 production model. The three individual lamps then were created into a single tri-bar lamp cluster, but the original concept is revived here. A large faux gas cap badge with 50 Years and GT will be on the rear fascia. The rear quarter windows will feature louvers, mimicking the external louvers on the 1965 fastback. The new louvers will be made of layered sheets of glass using a new construction technique developed for Mustang.
“Chrome trim was much more prevalent on cars in the 1960s than it is today, so we added some discreet highlights for the grille, side glass and tri-bar taillamps,” said Callum. “The darker Kona Blue provides a particularly striking contrast against the chrome.”
Inside, the Mustang gets aluminum trim spanning the instrument panel with a different finish, with a special serialized 50 Year Limited Edition badge on the passenger side. The steering wheel will be wrapped in leather with cashmere stitching. The stitching will also be used on the instrument panel, shifter boot, center armrest, door inserts and seats. The seats feature exclusive two-tone cashmere and black leather upholstery, and the Mustang 50 Year logo on the seat backs. Limited-edition cars will be equipped with loop-carpet floor mats with cashmere stitching and suede binding not available on other Mustangs.
Under the hood will be the performance pack 5.0-liter V8, upgraded to 420 hp and 529 Nm. The pack also includes six-piston Brembo front brakes, and 19-inch alloys with Pirelli P-Zero summer tires. The alloys feature a Y-spoke design inspired by the chromed steel wheels on the original Mustang.
The 50 Year Limited Edition is the only 2015 Mustang available with a combination of the performance pack with automatic transmission. The A/T cars will get a limited-slip rear differential with 3.55:1 final drive, while the six-speed manual cars get a Torsen differential with 3.73:1 final drive.
“We wanted to provide our most dedicated fans with the emotion of the original Mustang in a 21st century car,” said Ford. “With this 50 Year Limited Edition, I believe we have accomplished our goal.”
