Watch dashcam footage of Taiwan plane clipping car, bridge

February 05,2015

taipeiThere are several good reasons to install a dashboard-mounted camera in your car. It can provide evidence in a traffic accident, protect against extortionist motorists or cops, and capture frightening, surreal footage such as this.

A Taiwanese flight carrying 58 people banked sharply onto its side, clipped a highway bridge and careened into a shallow river Wednesday shortly after taking off from Taipei.

Footage captured from a dashcam purportedly of the ATR-72-600 prop-jet aircraft that was flying on its side, with one wing scraping past Taiwan’s busy highway just seconds before it plunged into the river, has been uploaded on YouTube. The plane rapidly fills the frame as its now-vertical wing scrapes over the road, hitting a vehicle before heading into the river.

Of the 58 people aboard, at least 12 people were killed, local media and officials said.

Fifteen people were rescued with injuries.

taipei-2The car shown in the video being hit by the plane remained mostly intact, but its windshield was shattered and its body sliced by the plane’s wing. It was a yellow Volkswagen MPV taxi. The driver of the taxi and a passenger were injured, according to TransAsia Airways director Peter Chen.

Speculation cited in local media said the pilot may have turned sharply to follow the line of the river to avoid crashing into a high-rise residential area nearby, but  Taiwan’s  aviation authority said it had no evidence of that.

It was the airline’s second French-Italian-built ATR 72 to crash in the past year.
