The Mercedes G-Class has been in production for 36 years , with its look and chassis remaining essentially the same. Now Mercedes has unveiled its successor, called the the G 500 4×4². The ‘near-series’ show model is a preview of the next generation G. The show car is built on the previous-generation G-Class chassis with the four-wheel drive system of the G 63 AMG 6×6.
G 500 4×4² uses a new twin-turbo V8. With 4.0 liter displacement, the engine uses two turbos mounted inside the engine’s V configuration, leading to a more compact design and better reponse. Mercedes promises sports-car like engine sound thanks to its twin sidepipes mounted in front of the rear wheels.
Wheels of the new G-Class show car are a huge 325/55 R 22. These plus a wide track allow reportedly superb with performance similar to a “high-powered rally car.” Optional for offroad use are 18-inch MT tires. Permanent all-wheel drive allow the G 500 4×4² to go through rocky or water-laden terrain. The portal axles allow the wheels to be mounted much further below on the axle heads, instead of the usual axle centers. The result is a 450mm ground clearance and 1000mm fording depth.
The G 500 4×4² has a towering height of 2.25 meters, and width of 2.10 meters. Carbon fiber wheel arch flarings and windshield surround lend a distinctive touch. The interior features full-blown luxury, with leather trim and heavily bolstered seats. The new SUV will be produced in Graza, Austria, continuing the line of development stretching back to 1979.
